Ailsa’s travel theme this week is ‘balance’. Here’s her link
Last Autumn I came across a balancing act in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.
This is Jefferson Rock.
It is named after the third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, who visited the area in 1783. He was so impressed with the view that he wrote in his book Notes on the State of Virginia, “This scene is worth a voyage across the Atlantic”.
Around 1860, to stabilize the rock, red sandstone pillars were place underneath it.
